My work has evolved over the past six years from a more traditional form of representation to a looser and more “cubist” approach. I prefer painting digitally as opposed to using paints and brushes because it affords me a larger color space and the ability to experiment to a larger degree with much more freedom. One does not have to wait for pigments to dry in order to repaint an area.
I utilize photos that I have taken as reference. Generally, many images are needed to compose my latest works. By incorporating multiple views in my paintings, I believe that a more complete depiction of a moment in time and space can be infused into the work. Color is freed from a literal “local color” use and plays a much more expressive role. Composition becomes more abstract as layers of multiple images play against each other. The “gestalt” of my works has become much more important than mere technique. Each painting is meant to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. It is my total emotional experience of a particular “moment in time and space” that I wish to impart to the viewer in as simple and direct manner as possible.
Because color is such an integral aspect of my work, I have taken on the responsibility of every aspect of the process. From the creation of the original digital file thru the execution of the final work on paper or canvas, I maintain complete control of the process. I have spent many thousands of dollars on the best giclee’ printer, spectrophotometer for creating custom color profiles and the best in archival materials and inks. Each work is proofed to exacting standards so that the final image is exactly how I envisioned it from the start.
