A.G. Hansen is an artist who is passionately devoted to capturing the delicate nuances of light and color exhibited by nature, evidenced by the subject matter in his mixed media and watercolor paintings: landscape, seascape, and wildlife.
“It is that magical and emotional moment, usually at dawn or at dusk when the light is filled with drama and emotional richness that I wish to capture in my paintings”.
This fleeting moment is captured using digital photos taken by the artist in order to assist him in creating his paintings. Each painting usually relies on more than one digital image in order to “capture the essence of the scene”.
The techniques employed involve the use of sophisticated digital tools, primarily a graphics tablet and stylus. Hansen literally paints with light since his canvas is a 21” high end computer monitor set up at an extremely high resolution. “Because I paint with light and not pigments, I can more vividly capture the subtle nuances of light and color that are vital to my work”. The graphics tablet supports over 1,000 levels of pressure thus assuring the same feel as using traditional brushes. The “canvas” is painted in small areas, allowing attention to the smallest of details. The file sizes typically are at least 100 million pixels or dots of color.
Once the painting is complete, the artist outputs his work on a eight color Giclee (orGiclee’) printer using archival quality acid free, mould made watercolor paper or artists canvas. The life expectancy of these prints is between 100 and 200 years. Editions are signed and numbered by the artist and limited to 50 pieces, thus assuring higher value for each piece. Unlike normal Giclee prints which are derived from photographic COPIES taken of an artist’s paintings, every print produced by Hansen is an ORIGINAL since it is output directly from the original painting file. Since the artist is in complete control of every step in the creation of his work, the highest level of quality, color and expression is achieved.
