The paintings in this group are all “mixed media” in that they combine the best of both digitalpainting techniques with traditional oil painting. The underpainting is created digitally with a graphics tablet and stylus. The artwork is then output onto archival quality 19 ounce cotton canvas using aqueous pigments and stretched onto heavy duty wooden stretcher bars. The painting is then finished with traditional oil painting techniques. It is here that impasto textures are created. This process assures that each painting is unique and will last 100 to 200 years.
My seascape paintings done in this manner have a life and quality that only oils on canvas can achieve! Add to this the presence that large size imparts and you truly have an impressive and dramatic focal point in your home. Wildlife paintings, landscape paintings and cityscapes all benefit from this unique process as well. The subject matter from which my paintings are derived is inspired from my travels around the country and the world. I capture a “special” moment in time, freezing the light, color, textures and forms with photographs and notes taken at the scene. When I return, I create my paintings using these notes and reference photos.
I find that combining digital painting techniques with traditional oil paint and brushes allows me to create a unique form of expression that fits perfectly with my artistic goals. In order to re-create the subtle effects of light, color and texture in nature, I start by “painting with light” and finish with the time tested techniques of the old masters! I hope that you enjoy the paintings in my gallery. Come back often since I am always adding new paintings. Enjoy!
